Birds need to feel safe when they are feeding
Birds all have different feeding styles and needs and will avoid areas in which they feel vulnerable. Selecting a suitable location for your bird table or ground feeder is therefore vital for success.
What height should a bird table be?
Generally speaking, songbirds such as blackbirds, robins and thrushes prefer feeding at ground level in open sites where they can see any potential predators such as cats or sparrow hawks. Place your ground feeder in an open area of lawn and move it frequently to find the best location and also for hygiene purposes.
Bird tables can either be placed in the open to attract birds such as blackbirds and robins, or closer to shrubs and trees to attract birds such as sparrows and tits. Songbirds prefer to feed in the open with good all round vision, whereas short winged birds such as sparrows prefer to feed closer to cover where they can quickly dart into a thicket if they feel threatened.
How long will it take for birds to use the bird table?
As always, keep trying – patience pays off. Time and experimentation will ultimately show you the best location in your garden for your chosen bird feeding equipment.
