None of our caged bird feeders are guaranteed to be 100 percent effective because hungry large birds and smaller individuals will take greater risks to reach the bird seed. However, they provide a high level of deterrence.

Our starling-proof bird feeders include:

  • Seed Guardian Feeder
  • Nut Guardian Feeder

Our starling-proof feeders can be used throughout the year and will be enjoyed by smaller and more timid birds like robins and wrens, giving them a quiet feeding area. You can also feed your garden birds earlier in the day because starlings tend to eat later on.

Should I feed starlings?

Starlings may have a bad reputation but just like other birds, they are looking for food, especially during the winter months when natural food is scarce. They have been known to clean out a bird feeder within minutes but this is because they have evolved to feed quickly in flocks, rather than the fact that they are greedy. Read our blog about pesky starlings.

Our starling population has fallen by over 80 per cent since the 1970s. Always offer this beautiful species food when they appear in our gardens, typically during late May and June. They will enjoy suet pellets, mealworms and suet fat balls. It is important to provide live food during nesting season because they will only feed invertebrate prey to their young.

What’s the best bird feeder for small birds?

Small birds sometimes need a little extra help, particularly as they can’t compete with larger birds for food. Luckily, there are various ways you can keep larger birds away from the food you provide for small birds.

The Guardian feeders or Nuttery feeders, which have bars to keep larger birds and squirrels away from the feeder inside. Another option are the lantern style feeders such as the Little Lantern and My Favourites, which allow smaller birds to cling onto it but doesn’t accommodate larger ones.

How to hang a bird feeder

Some people choose wall brackets, whereas others prefer to hang their bird feeders from bird tables or trees. If you opt for a tree, you can use a durable hook - you can find more information here.

We have a helpful Blog article which you may find worth a read.

How do birds find bird feeders?

Birds have a poor sense of smell compared to most other animals. So they find food using their extremely keen eyesight.

Smaller birds often search for food in groups, particularly during the colder months when food is more scarce. Woodland birds, for instance, can even search for food in flocks, including various species.

Of course, once birds find food in a location, they’re more likely to return there for more. So, if you can make your outdoor space a welcoming place for birds, you can hope to attract regular visitors.
