Audrey the Hedgehog wins hearts

Audrey the hedgehog, and The Hedgehog Lady – London Colney Hedgehog Rescue Centre, have received the most ‘likes’ in this year’s Hedgehog Hero Big Giveaway. Receiving 358 votes, Esther Chant, the Hedgehog Lady herself, has won the £250 prize as well as a bag of Ark Hedgehog Food Original.

Audrey was found, soaking wet in the rain, on a garden patio in St Audrey’s Close, Hatfield. On arrival to the Rescue Centre she was cold, dehydrated and weighed a tiny 52g (almost the same size as a matchbox). Luckily she was rescued just in time. Audrey was syringe fed every three hours until she was able to eat on her own. Making a great recovery, she was overwintered and released early this year, weighing 980g, to a lovely garden in St. Albans.  Since her release, the hedgehog has been seen returning for the occasional bite to eat.

When Esther first started as a rescue carer she said that she would only take in six hedgehogs at a time…..currently she has 44! This year alone she has looked after more than 150. Like many carers she also works full time, leaving her with little time to fund-raise. Self- financing, it costs more than £130 a month just to feed her residents and the extra food and prize money will be a big help.

The purpose of Ark’s Hedgehog Heroes BIG Giveaway was two-fold. Firstly, to raise public awareness of hedgehogs at this critical time of year. We also wanted to reward the dedicated carers, who give their time freely and willingly to rescue and care for sick, orphaned and injured hedgehogs throughout the year. £3,000 of Ark Hedgehog Food Original has been sent to Rescue Centres round the country at this busy time of year.

So thank you for everyone that took part and all of your supporters, friends and families that supported your work by ‘liking’ your photos.
