How to get rid of green algae in ponds and water features naturally

There are many chemical-free, natural ways to get rid of green algae, blanket weed, duckweed, stagnant water and other water feature problems, so we`ve put together a complete range of products to help you.

Whether you have a fishpond, wildlife pond, bird bath, fountain, water butt or any other water feature. You’ll want clean, clear water that is safe for fish, amphibians, bugs, birds, and all other wildlife to drink and breathe.

Here are some of the problems you may encounter with natural remedies and solutions.

Green algae can be broken down into two main types – Green water, and Blanketweed. Green water is the term for when the water looks like pea soup, and you can’t see into the water any longer. Blanketweed is the name for the long, green, filamentous algae which attaches to the sides of the pond and can eventually spread across the water like thick, green spiderwebs.

Stagnant or smelly water. This is when all the oxygen is removed due to an imbalance or excessive nitrates in water. This may be caused by organic litter such as fallen leaves rotting in the bottom of the pond. Typically, this occurs in early springtime when the water is still cold and no circulation has been occurring.

Alternatively, you can apply several products individually or even in combination to resolve the issues including,

Duckweed Control
Algae Control
Sludge Control
Mud Muncher
Water Butt Fresh
Barley Straw Extract

The active ingredients of the above solutions are a special array of bacteria that will selectively consume the problem algae, convert nitrates and ammonia, or reduce sludge by floccing fine particles into solids. Bacteria can also be used to help strip the water of nutrients which the algae would otherwise feed on, while at the same time using enzymes to attack and break down algae strands.

Barley Straw extract is another natural way to fight algae. Submerged in water, barley straw starts to break down, and as it does so, releases peroxides into the water which combat algae. You can purchase it natural straw or as a concentrated extract liquid.

In severe cases, many of the natural algae options listed above can be used in combination. So, if you have thick green algae (pea soup), blanket weed or duck weed growth problem, remove as much as you can, oxygenate the water and then add the bacteria and enzymes, along with extract of Barley straw. The effects should become apparent in a few days or weeks.
