What do you recommend to help prevent the Trichomoniasis parasite?

Always sweep up droppings and spilt old food from under the feeders, thereby preventing a build up of infection. Clean and disinfect feeders and bird baths regularly, rinsing them thoroughly, and allowing them to air dry completely. Always change the drinking and bathing water daily, and don't place these under feeders where the water will quickly become contaminated with food particles and droppings.

What else can help prevent the spread of disease amongst my garden birds?

You can reduce the number of birds gathering in one place by spreading out feeding stations or hanging feeders to different areas of your garden - akin to "social distancing" for birds! Using Vet Ark Citrosan in all drinking and bathing water offered is vital.

How often should I clean my bird feeders?

Bird feeders should be cleaned at least once a week, and more often during warm or wet weather or when they are heavily used. Feeders bring birds together in a concentrated area, so regular cleaning helps reduce the build-up and spread of bacteria and disease. Empty any old food, wash the feeder thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before refilling. Avoid overfilling feeders, as smaller amounts that are eaten quickly can help keep food fresher and make regular cleaning easier.

What's the least unpleasant way to clean a bird feeder?

The easiest way to clean bird feeders is to keep a dedicated bucket, brush and pair of rubber gloves for the job. Keeping this equipment in a shed or other outdoor area means you do not need to clean feeders in your kitchen sink. Empty the feeder, wash it thoroughly with hot soapy water, scrub away any food residue and droppings, then rinse well. Allow the feeder to dry completely before refilling it with fresh food.

Is it safe for me to handle dirty feeders?

Yes, you can clean dirty bird feeders safely by taking a few sensible hygiene precautions. Wear rubber gloves when handling feeders, clean them outdoors where possible, and keep cleaning equipment separate from household items. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the feeder, even if you have worn gloves. If you have a weakened immune system or another health condition that increases your risk of infection, take extra care and consider asking someone else to clean heavily soiled feeders.

Should I stop feeding if I see a sick bird?

Yes, if you suspect a bird is showing signs of disease, stop feeding for at least two weeks from the last sighting of an unwell bird. This gives birds time to disperse and can help reduce the risk of disease spreading at feeding stations. Thoroughly clean and disinfect your feeders while they are not being used, and leave bird baths empty during this period. Only restart feeding once you are no longer seeing sick birds, and continue to monitor the garden closely for any further signs of disease.

Do I need disinfectant, or is soapy water enough?

Hot soapy water is usually sufficient for routine cleaning, provided the feeder is thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed afterwards. Physical cleaning removes old food, dirt and droppings that can harbour harmful bacteria, while a suitable wildlife-safe disinfectant can provide an additional level of hygiene, particularly after disease has been suspected in the garden. Always follow the disinfectant manufacturer's instructions and rinse the feeder thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely before refilling and putting it back outside.
