Where should I place a Blue Tit nest box?

Blue Tit nest boxes should be fixed to a tree or wall around 2–4 metres above the ground, ideally in a shady area, facing north-east, to avoid strong sunlight.

What size hole should a Blue Tit nest box have?

Blue tits prefer an entrance hole around 26-28mm wide, helping keep larger birds from taking over the nest.

When is the best time to put up a Blue Tit nest box?

Autumn or early winter is ideal, as birds may use the box for shelter before nesting season begins in spring.

Why has my box been ignored for two years?

An unused nest box does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with it, but its position is worth checking. Avoid exposed south- or west-facing locations where the box can receive strong afternoon sunlight or driving rain, and consider moving it to a more sheltered north- or east-facing position if practical. If you need to reposition the box, autumn or winter is a good time to do so, before birds begin prospecting for nesting sites. Give it another season, as birds can take time to discover and use a new nest box.

How many nest boxes can I put in one garden?

You can put up more than one nest box in a garden, but it is best to space boxes apart, particularly if they are intended for the same territorial species. Blue tits and other small garden birds defend nesting territories during the breeding season, so closely positioned boxes may not both be used. Where possible, place boxes in different parts of the garden and use natural screening, such as hedges or shrubs, to reduce competition between nesting birds. Boxes designed for different species can sometimes be positioned closer together.

Blue Tits pecked at the hole and then left. What happened?

That is usually normal prospecting behaviour rather than a sign that the birds have rejected the nest box. Blue tits may investigate a box repeatedly, including inspecting or working around the entrance, before deciding whether it is suitable for nesting. They may return several times before settling on a site, so give them time and avoid disturbing the box. If you want to watch their behaviour, observing from a window is better than opening or inspecting the box.

Should I put anything inside the nest box?

No, there is usually no need to put anything inside a bird nest box; the birds will bring in the materials they need themselves. Avoid adding hay, cotton wool or shredded paper, as unsuitable or damp materials can cause problems for nesting birds. You can use specialised nest box starter material or hang bird nesting material in your garden for birds to help themselves.

When should I clean the nest box out?

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, you may only clean a nest box between 1st October and 31st January, when it is most likely to be unoccupied and before birds begin looking for nesting sites in spring. Remove the old nesting material and brush out the box thoroughly to clear debris and potential parasites. Avoid using household disinfectants, insecticides or other chemicals inside the box. Never clean or disturb a nest box while it is occupied, as active nests containing eggs or dependent young are protected by law. Once clean, refit the lid securely and leave the box undisturbed.
