Which birds take fruit and nuts rather than seed?

Blackbirds and thrushes are particularly likely to take fruit, while robins, starlings, waxwings and blackcaps may also enjoy foods such as raisins, sultanas and chopped apple. These species are generally more comfortable feeding from the ground or a flat surface than from a tube feeder. Offer suitable fruit on a bird table or ground-feeding tray, and cut larger pieces such as apples into manageable portions. Fresh drinking water should also be available alongside supplementary food.

Do raisins actually get eaten by birds, or do they just sit there?

Raisins can be eaten by garden birds, but it may take time for them to discover and accept them. Blackbirds, thrushes, robins and starlings may take raisins and other dried fruit, particularly when offered alongside other suitable foods. Soaking raisins in warm water first can make them softer and easier for birds to eat. Start with a small amount rather than scattering lots across the garden, then increase the quantity if you find they are being eaten regularly.

Are raisins safe if I have a dog?

No, raisins are be toxic to dogs, so extra care is needed if you have a dog that has access to your garden. If you want to offer raisins, sultanas or currants to birds, use a raised bird table or feeding area that your dog cannot reach. Alternatively, choose other suitable foods for fruit-eating birds, such as fresh apple. If you think your dog has eaten raisins, sultanas, currants or grapes, contact your vet promptly.

Should nuts be raw or roasted for birds?

Plain and unsalted is more important than whether nuts are raw or roasted. Raw nuts can be suitable for garden birds when they are fresh and stored correctly, while plain roasted nuts can also be offered. Avoid salted, flavoured or seasoned nuts, as these are unsuitable for wild birds. Choose nuts sold specifically for wildlife where possible, store them somewhere cool and dry, and discard any that become mouldy, damp, discoloured or significantly deteriorated.

What fruit can I put out for birds from the kitchen?

Apples and pears can be offered to garden birds such as blackbirds and thrushes. Cut larger fruit into manageable pieces or halve it, and place it on a bird table or ground-feeding tray. Avoid fruit that has been cooked with added sugar, salt, fat or other unsuitable ingredients, and remove any uneaten food regularly.
