Does encouraging wildlife actually control garden pests?

Encouraging a range of wildlife can provide natural pest control, although it is not a quick solution to an established infestation. Birds such as blue tits collect caterpillars and other insects to feed their young, while ladybirds and other beneficial insects prey on aphids and other garden pests. Providing suitable food, shelter and flowering plants can help support these natural predators. The aim is a healthy balance rather than eliminating every pest, as some insects are an important part of the garden ecosystem.

What brings in the beneficial insects?

Providing flowering plants, shelter and avoiding unnecessary insecticide use can help attract beneficial insects such as ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies. Many adult beneficial insects feed on nectar, while stems, leaf litter and other undisturbed areas can provide shelter through winter. Leaving some dead stems standing until spring can provide valuable overwintering habitat. A diverse garden with plenty of flowers and natural shelter can support these insects and the natural pest control they provide.

Do ladybird towers and lacewing houses work?

Ladybird towers and lacewing houses can provide sheltered spaces for beneficial insects to rest and overwinter, although they are only one part of creating suitable habitat. They do not attract or produce insects by themselves, so providing flowering plants, natural shelter and avoiding unnecessary insecticide use is also important. Site an insect shelter in a sheltered position close to suitable planting. It is also normal for aphids to appear before their natural predators become active in spring.

Can wildlife help control slugs?

Hedgehogs, frogs, toads and some garden birds all eat slugs, but they are unlikely to remove them completely. Habitat is the most useful way to encourage these natural predators, with damp cover, log piles and ponds providing places for wildlife to shelter. Hedgehogs do eat slugs, although they are not considered a preferred food source. Avoiding slug pellets can also help reduce the risk of harming wildlife that may feed on slugs or encounter the pellets.
