We offer a range of wildflower seed species and seed mixes

We offer an extensive range of specially selected wildflower mixes to suit a wide range of soil types and environments. All seeds and seed mixes are thoroughly tested to ensure successful germination and a wonderful display. They are sourced from established and recommended UK growers and have been hand-washed and packed to ensure exceptional standards of quality.

We stock both Ark Wildlife Seeds by species, including ragged robin, marjoram, campion, foxglove, cowslip and betony. We also offer a range of Ark Wildlife Seed Mixes, containing native British annuals and perennials. We can help you choose one for your local conditions and advise you on sowing.

Support nature diversity and natural habitats for our wildlife

Roughly 97 per cent of our wildflower meadows have disappeared since the first and second world wars. This is due to increased farming as vast areas of meadows and woodland areas have been cleared for crop production and grazing. Now one in five species of wildflower is also threatened by extinction.

Through wildflower planting, you will help to maintain the diversity of species that have evolved over hundreds of years and help maintain a healthy ecosystem. They are also ideal for areas that are hard to cultivate conventionally because the soil is poor, for example. Read our blog on plant life - a voice for wildflowers.

Does ‘wildflower’ mean native?

No, the term ‘wildflower’ does not necessarily mean a seed mix contains plants native to the UK. Some mixes may include non-native species that are wildflowers elsewhere in the world but provide less value for native UK wildlife. When choosing a wildflower mix, check the packet for the plant species included and look for suitable UK native species. If the full seed list is not provided, ask the supplier before buying.

Why did my wildflower patch fail?

Grass and overly fertile soil are two common reasons wildflower patches struggle to establish. Vigorous grasses can outcompete wildflowers, while soil that is rich in nutrients often encourages grass growth rather than a diverse range of wildflowers. For a new patch, remove existing turf and sow onto bare, well-prepared ground without adding fertiliser. Unlike a traditional garden border, wildflower areas generally benefit from relatively low-nutrient soil, so avoid feeding the area.

When should I sow wildflower seeds?

For many UK native wildflower mixes, autumn is a good time to sow, typically from September onwards. Cooler, wetter conditions can help seeds establish naturally over winter, while some species benefit from exposure to cold before germinating. Spring sowing in March and April can also work well, particularly where autumn sowing is not practical. Prepare bare, lightly cultivated soil, scatter the seed evenly and gently rake it into the surface rather than burying it deeply.

Do I still need to mow a wildflower meadow?

Yes, mowing is an important part of maintaining a wildflower meadow, but the timing and removal of the cuttings are important. A traditional wildflower meadow is often cut once the majority of flowers have finished flowering and set seed, typically in late summer or early autumn. Rake the cuttings off after mowing to remove nutrients from the soil and prevent vigorous grasses from becoming dominant. The exact mowing schedule can vary depending on the wildflower mix and the type of meadow you are creating.
