Which wildlife house should I start with?

The best wildlife house to start with depends on which species visit your garden and the habitat already available. A hedgehog house can provide a sheltered nesting place where there are suitable hedges and connected garden spaces, while a solitary bee house can complement a garden with plenty of flowering plants. Bird boxes are another useful option for gardens with suitable trees, walls or other secure fixing points. Take a look at the wildlife already visiting and choose a habitat that meets a need your garden does not currently provide.

Do wildlife houses actually get used?

Yes, wildlife houses can be used, but the time it takes for wildlife to move in varies considerably between species and individual gardens. Bird boxes may be used within their first breeding season, while bat boxes and bumblebee nest boxes can take much longer to attract occupants. Correct positioning is important, but once a house is installed, avoid unnecessary checks or disturbance. Signs around an entrance can indicate use without needing to open the house, so give wildlife time to discover it.

Where's the general rule for siting wildlife houses?

As a general rule, wildlife houses should be placed somewhere sheltered, quiet and protected from excessive heat and disturbance. North- or east-facing positions can suit many bird and wildlife boxes in the UK, helping to reduce exposure to strong midday and afternoon sunlight. However, always consider the needs of the species the house is designed for, as some habitats have different requirements. Hedgehog houses, for example, should be positioned at ground level in a sheltered area with natural cover and easy access from the surrounding garden.

Do they all need cleaning out?

No, cleaning requirements vary between different types of wildlife house. Many bird and mammal houses can benefit from being cleaned once a year in autumn, when they are most likely to be unoccupied. Remove old nesting material and debris, then clean with hot water and a stiff brush, avoiding household chemicals or disinfectants unless it is a wildlife-safe formula. Bat boxes are different and should generally be left undisturbed, particularly if bats may be using them.

What helps more than a wildlife house?

Natural habitat can often support more wildlife than a wildlife house on its own. Log piles, hedges, long grass, leaf litter and standing plant stems provide food, shelter and places to nest or overwinter for a wide range of species. A wildlife house can complement this habitat, but it should not be seen as a substitute for it. Start with one suitable wildlife house alongside a small wild corner, then allow the habitat to develop naturally over time.
