Where should I place a Blackbird nest box?

Blackbird nest boxes should be placed low down, usually below 2 metres, in a quiet and sheltered spot hidden amongst plants or shrubs.

Do blackbirds use traditional bird boxes?

Not usually. Blackbirds prefer open-fronted nest boxes rather than enclosed boxes with small entrance holes.

When should I clean a Blackbird nest box?

Cleaning nest boxes between October to November is ideal, once birds have vacated, and the legal window opens.

Do blackbirds use nest boxes at all?

Yes, blackbirds can use nest boxes, but they are more likely to choose an open-fronted nest box or nesting ledge than a box with a small entrance hole. Blackbirds usually build their nests in dense vegetation, such as hedges and shrubs, so they may take longer to use a purpose-built box. Open-fronted designs can also be suitable for robins and wrens, making them a useful choice if you want to support several species of garden birds.

Where should an open-fronted nest box go?

Place an open-fronted nest box in a sheltered, well-screened position, ideally around 1–2 metres above ground level and surrounded by dense vegetation. Blackbirds, robins and wrens prefer nesting sites with plenty of cover around the entrance, such as ivy, a thick hedge or a dense climber. Avoid exposed positions where the box is easily visible from all directions. A sheltered spot against a wall covered in ivy or among dense planting can provide particularly suitable nesting habitat.

How can I help blackbirds besides a nest box?

Providing suitable food and natural foraging habitat can help blackbirds, particularly where they can feed safely at ground level. A ground-feeding tray or bird table can be used to offer foods such as mealworms, suet pellets, raisins and suitable fruit, including windfall apples. Leaving some leaf litter beneath hedges and allowing areas of grass to grow slightly longer can also provide opportunities for blackbirds to find earthworms and other invertebrates naturally. Providing dense shrubs and hedges gives them useful cover for nesting and shelter.

Blackbirds have nested somewhere awkward. Can I move it?

No, you should not move or disturb an active blackbird nest containing eggs or dependent young. Wild bird nests are legally protected while they are in use, and intentionally damaging or destroying an active nest, or disturbing birds in ways prohibited by law, can be an offence. The safest approach is to leave the nest undisturbed and work around it until the young have fledged. Blackbirds can raise more than one brood during the breeding season, so consider putting up an open-fronted nest box for future nesting attempts.
