Shrivelled peanuts are not necessarily mouldy, but any nuts that look spoiled, dusty or significantly deteriorated are best removed. Store peanuts somewhere cool and dry, use clean, dry feeders and always empty old food from the feeder before adding a fresh supply.

Whole nuts or kernels – which are best for birds?

Kernels are generally the more practical choice for feeding birds from a mesh peanut feeder, as birds can take smaller pieces through the mesh without needing to carry a whole nut away. Whole peanuts can also be offered, but they are more likely to be carried away or dropped, particularly by larger birds. Whole nuts in their shells can be useful for species such as jays, as well as squirrels and ground-feeding wildlife. Choose the nut and feeder combination according to the birds you want to attract.

Should I feed peanuts to birds during the breeding season?

Yes, peanuts can be offered during the breeding season, but they should be provided in a suitable mesh feeder rather than as whole nuts on a bird table. A mesh feeder allows birds to take smaller pieces, reducing the risk of a whole peanut being carried back to the nest and fed to a chick.
