Won't the birds be put off by people behind the glass?

Birds can become accustomed to people watching from behind a window, particularly when the viewing area is kept quiet and movement is limited. Placing a bird feeder close to the window can help birds become familiar with the presence of people indoors, although some species may take longer to settle than others. Blue tits, house sparrows and robins may all visit garden feeders regularly. Once birds are comfortable, a window can provide an excellent opportunity to observe their behaviour without disturbing them.

Do the suction cups hold in cold weather?

Suction cups can hold in cold weather, provided they are fitted correctly to clean, smooth glass. Cold temperatures can make the rubber less flexible, so fitting them when the weather is mild can help create a good seal. Clean and dry the glass thoroughly, then press the suction cup firmly against the surface to remove trapped air. Check the cups regularly, particularly before winter, and refit them if they begin to loosen.

Can squirrels get to a window feeder?

Squirrels may be able to reach a window feeder if there are nearby structures they can use to jump or climb onto it. A feeder fixed to an upper-floor window is generally more difficult for squirrels to access, while a ground-floor window close to a fence, wall, shed, tree or other structure may be within reach. Before installing a window feeder, check the surrounding area for potential launch points and position it as far as practical from them.

Is a window feeder a bird-strike risk?

A window feeder can actually reduce the risk of serious window collisions when it is positioned very close to the glass. Placing the feeder within around 30cm of the window means birds have little space to build up speed if they leave the feeder unexpectedly. Feeders positioned several metres away can give birds more room to gain momentum before reaching the glass. For added protection, window collision deterrents such as external decals or patterned film can make the glass more visible to birds.

Which bird food works best in a window feeder?

Sunflower hearts are an excellent choice for window feeders because they are husk-free, helping to reduce mess around the windowsill and below the feeder. They are also enjoyed by a wide range of garden birds, including tits, finches and sparrows. Fat balls are another suitable option for feeders with built-in holders. Offer small quantities and refill regularly, particularly in warm or sunny positions where food can deteriorate more quickly.

How do I clean it without taking it off the glass?

Choose a window feeder with a removable tray, as this makes regular cleaning much easier without disturbing the whole feeder. Remove the tray and wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water, then rinse and allow it to dry completely before replacing it. Cleaning the tray at least once a week, or more often in warm or wet weather, helps remove old food and droppings and keeps the feeding area hygienic for visiting birds.
