Pond & Water Treatments

Adding a pond is one of the best things you can do for the wildlife in your garden. A pond can be an attractive and enticing feature in any garden and will be a haven for wildlife of all descriptions. With 70 percent of wild ponds being lost from the UK countryside, garden ponds are increasingly important to support local wildlife, particularly amphibians.

Why does my pond turn green every summer?

Green pond water is usually caused by microscopic algae responding to a combination of sunlight and excess nutrients in the water. Nutrients can enter through fish waste, fallen leaves, uneaten food and garden run-off, while direct sunlight provides the conditions algae need to grow rapidly. Increasing natural shade with suitable pond plants can help reduce sunlight reaching the water, while removing excess debris and avoiding overfeeding can reduce nutrient levels. Addressing these underlying causes can provide a more lasting solution than treating the algae alone.

What clears green water?

Reducing the sunlight and excess nutrients available to algae is usually the most effective way to improve green pond water. Aim to provide plenty of natural shade with floating plants such as water lilies, while submerged plants can absorb nutrients from the water and compete with algae. Barley straw is also sometimes used as it slowly breaks down in the pond. In filtered ponds, a UV clarifier can help clear suspended algae. Give natural methods time to work, as improvements may take several weeks.

Does barley straw work?

Barley straw can help reduce algae growth, but it works gradually rather than providing an immediate solution for green water. As the straw decomposes, it releases compounds that can inhibit the growth of some algae, so it is generally more useful as a preventative measure than for clearing an established bloom. It is often added in spring before water temperatures rise, while barley straw pellets or extracts can provide alternative ways to apply it. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the product you use.

How do I get rid of duckweed?

The most effective approach is to remove the duckweed regularly while also reducing the excess nutrients that encourage it to grow. Use a pond net or skimmer to remove as much duckweed as possible, then reduce sources of nutrients such as uneaten fish food, fallen leaves and garden run-off. Duckweed can reproduce rapidly, so repeat the process regularly and remove the collected plants from the pond rather than leaving them to decompose in the water.

Should I clean my pond out completely?

A complete pond clean-out is rarely necessary and can cause significant disturbance to the wildlife and natural balance of an established pond. Instead, remove excess leaf litter, dead vegetation and silt gradually, ideally in autumn when many pond animals are less active. Work on part of the pond at a time and leave some areas undisturbed. If you remove material, leave it beside the pond for a day or two so insects and other small creatures can return to the water.
