Do insect hotels really work?

Yes, insect hotels can provide useful shelter and nesting spaces for a range of garden insects when they are designed and positioned appropriately. They work best alongside natural habitats such as log piles, leaf litter and areas of longer vegetation, which provide additional places for insects to shelter and find food. An insect hotel is therefore one part of a wildlife-friendly garden, rather than a replacement for natural habitat.

Where's the best spot for an insect hotel?

The best position for an insect hotel depends on the insects it is designed to support. Bee hotels with nesting tubes should be placed somewhere sunny and sheltered, ideally facing south or south-east, with the entrance kept clear of vegetation. Hotels providing shelter for other insects can be positioned in a more shaded, sheltered area close to natural planting. Whichever type you choose, fix it securely and avoid moving it once insects have started using it.

I've had my insect hotel up for months and haven't seen a thing. What's gone wrong?

Nothing may be wrong; insects can be difficult to spot once they have started using an insect hotel. Ladybirds, lacewings, beetles and other insects may shelter deep inside crevices or tubes rather than remaining visible. If your hotel includes solitary bee nesting tubes, sealed entrances can be a useful sign that they are being used, particularly when capped with mud or plant material. Give the hotel time and avoid disturbing the nesting areas.

My insect house is full of spiders. Have I got it wrong?

No, spiders using your insect hotel is not necessarily a problem. Spiders may use sheltered spaces within insect hotels as resting or hiding places, and their presence is a natural part of a healthy garden ecosystem. They also feed on a range of small insects and other invertebrates, so they can contribute to natural pest control. There is therefore no need to remove spiders simply because they have taken up residence.

Will an insect hotel help with aphids and garden pests?

Yes, an insect hotel can support beneficial insects that feed on aphids and other garden pests. Ladybirds and lacewing larvae are important natural predators of aphids, while other insects using an insect hotel may contribute to a healthy garden ecosystem in different ways. Positioning the hotel near areas with plenty of flowering plants can provide useful habitat alongside natural food sources. An insect hotel is best used as part of a wider approach to encouraging beneficial wildlife.

Will an insect house attract wasps or anything I'd rather not have?

An insect hotel may attract solitary wasps, but these are generally very different from the social wasps that visit food and drinks in summer. Solitary wasps do not form large colonies and many species hunt insects such as aphids, caterpillars and grubs to feed their young. Insect hotels are designed to provide individual nesting spaces, rather than the enclosed cavities preferred by social wasps when building a colony.

When should I put up an insect house?

You can put an insect hotel up at any time of year, but autumn and early spring are particularly useful times. Putting one up in autumn can provide shelter for insects such as ladybirds and lacewings as they look for places to overwinter. Installing it before spring also gives solitary bees, including red mason bees that become active from around March, time to find suitable nesting sites. Once positioned, leave the insect hotel undisturbed so wildlife can settle in.

Which insect house should I choose?

The best insect house depends on the wildlife you want to support and where you plan to position it.
