What is it?
Our Hedgehog Starter Pack includes all the essentials for looking after your garden hedgehogs. Complete with an excellent hedgehog house, original hedgehog food, food and water bowls, bedding, an Ark hedgehog highway sign and a guide to hedgehogs.

How does it help?
Hedgehogs enjoy roaming through gardens foraging for food and searching for nesting sites – especially during hibernation season.

Our Hedgehog Starter Pack kit helps you set up the perfect hedgehog area. The hedgehog house has a hinged inspection roof made from tough, weather-resistant materials, for durability year-round and easy access for cleaning. Complete with hedgehog bedding, hedgehog food, water bowl, food bowl, hedgehog highway sign and colour guide to hedgehogs.

The ideal place to put your hedgehog house is under a hedge or shrub and away from sunlight – fill with bedding and dried leaves to encourage visits.

Sean says:
“Hedgehogs were voted the UK`s favourite animal and everyone wants to see one in their own garden. For those lucky enough to have a sighting, we`ve put together a starter pack to help encourage them to re-visit and maybe even make your garden their home.”

Helpful – Caring – Responsible

When Sean McMenemy started Noah’s Ark Wildlife Gardens as a landscaping business back in 1991, little did he know what a huge impact he was to make on the bird feeding and garden wildlife industries over the following decades.

Over 30-years later he still brings the same passion for garden wildlife to work every day, so it’s no wonder we’re so highly respected. Our expertise lies in providing carefully selected natural food and products that offer significant benefits to wildlife – with the type of customer service only true enthusiasm for our subject can bring.

Meeting a demand for natural, nutritious wildlife food

In those early days, Sean constantly received requests for help in making his clients’ natural gardens more wildlife friendly. Requests for bird food encouraged Sean to research bird feeding, and at that time he found problems in the market with quality and service. He knew then the only way forward was to create his own natural, nutritious range of wildlife food and present it in a way which benefited both the wildlife and the customer. Ark Wildlife was born.

The company has steadily grown since those early days, now standing as one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of bird food and garden wildlife products, despatching over 500 parcels per day across the United Kingdom.

Exceptional service, because we care more than we can put into words

No matter how large our business is now, Ark Wildlife aims to combine the convenience of an online mail order outlet with the caring, helpful touch of a specialist shop. Our people make the difference. We take great pride in the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our ever-growing workforce, still led by our inspirational driving force, Sean. If you read through some of Sean’s blog posts you will see how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares for the welfare of our wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you give me some advice on where to put a hedgehog house in my garden?

Hedgehogs readily take up residence in appropriate hedgehog houses and for the best chances of success they should be situated in a quiet part of the garden, preferably against a wall or fence out of direct sunlight. Make sure the entrance is sheltered to avoid being exposed to drafts and strong winds.
Hedgehog houses may be used for winter hibernation, throughout the summer as lie-ups or, if you're very lucky, by a pregnant female making a nest to have her young in June.

When is a good time to clean a hedgehog house?

The best time to clean and freshen hedgehog houses is during April when hedgehogs are fully active and before the breeding season starts. Remember to check to ensure there are no residents. Remove all the bedding and give it a good clean with hot water and a mild detergent. It's also a good idea to disinfect with boiling water or a suitable veterinary product to kill off any parasites and eggs that may be present. Finally, thoroughly rinse out with clean water and allow to air dry (with the roof open) on a nice warm day. Fill with fresh bedding and replace the roof and put back to its original situation.
Hedgehogs will use different summer sleeping quarters to their hibernation roost and the cleaning process will not upset or interfere with the hedgehog's natural patterns.

When Should I stop feeding my hedgehogs?

Traditionally, it was thought that feeding hedgehogs throughout the winter could delay their hibernation and cause them harm. However, guidance on this matter has now changed, with experts advising people to continue feeding hedgehogs as long as they’re around to eat.
