Garden wildlife cameras are easy to use, and depending on the device can record still images, video and even time lapse during the day and night. Options include battery operated remote cameras with automatic triggers to capture the action whenever it occurs. More and more technology is becoming affordable and wi-fi is becoming ever more popular. High definition full colour images are now the norm and 4k video capture is widely available.

Cameras capture images and video on to cards which can be viewed and downloaded, while many more offer live streaming to mobile devices and even cloud storage. Will a camera pick up much in an ordinary garden?

Yes, a wildlife camera can reveal considerably more activity in an ordinary garden than you might expect, particularly after dark. Foxes, hedgehogs, cats and nocturnal garden visitors can all pass through while you are asleep or indoors, while birds may be captured visiting feeding areas at dawn. You may also discover wildlife using your garden regularly without ever seeing it yourself. Positioning the camera near feeders, paths or other areas of activity can increase the chance of capturing useful footage.

Do solar cameras get enough light in a British winter?

Solar wildlife cameras can continue to work through a British winter, but performance depends on the camera, solar panel and how much direct sunlight the panel receives. A south-facing position with a clear view of the sky will generally provide more useful winter sunlight than a shaded or north-facing location. Nearby trees, buildings and fences can also cast longer shadows in winter, reducing solar charging. In prolonged periods of dull weather or cold temperatures, you may still need to recharge the battery manually.

Where should I put a wildlife camera?

Place your wildlife camera close to an area where wildlife is likely to pass regularly, such as a feeding station, garden path, fence gap or hedgehog house entrance. Position the camera low enough to capture animals clearly and aim it at a specific point rather than across the whole garden. Keep long grass, leaves and overhanging branches out of the frame, as movement caused by wind can trigger the camera unnecessarily. Check the position during the day and adjust the angle before leaving it to record.

Do I need wifi for a wildlife camera?

No, you do not necessarily need Wi-Fi for a wildlife camera. Many trail cameras record photographs and videos directly onto an SD card, which you can remove and view later on a computer. This makes them useful for locations further down the garden where Wi-Fi coverage may be limited. Wi-Fi-enabled cameras can offer additional features, such as remote viewing, but they may be more suitable when the camera is positioned within a reliable network range. Check the features of the individual model before choosing.

Is it OK to put a camera in a nest box?

Yes, a camera can be fitted in a nest box, provided it is installed before the breeding season and does not disturb nesting birds. Fit and test the camera while the box is unoccupied, ideally well before birds begin nesting, then avoid opening or adjusting the box once it is in use. The camera should be securely fitted without obstructing the entrance or reducing the space available to the birds. If bats are using a box, different legal protections apply, so seek advice from a suitably qualified bat professional before carrying out any work.
