Will frogs use a house without a pond?

Yes, frogs and toads can use a wildlife shelter even if you do not have a pond. Outside the breeding season, they spend much of their time on land, seeking cool, damp places where they can shelter and forage for invertebrates. A pond nearby can increase the likelihood of frogs and toads visiting your garden, particularly during the breeding season. Position a frog house in a shaded, sheltered area where it is protected from direct sunlight and drying out.

Where should a frog and toad house go?

Place a frog and toad house in a shaded, damp and undisturbed part of the garden. Under a hedge, beside dense planting or on the north side of a shed can provide suitable shelter from direct sunlight and drying winds. Positioning it near a pond or other damp habitat can make it easier for frogs and toads to move between shelter and feeding areas. Set the entrance at ground level and cover the area around it with leaf litter or vegetation.

What else do frogs need from the garden?

Frogs and toads benefit from plenty of cover, damp areas and natural shelter, so avoid using slug pellets and other pesticides where possible. Log piles, leaf litter, dense planting and areas of longer vegetation can provide places to hide and forage for invertebrates. Damp, shaded areas are particularly valuable during dry summer weather. If you have a pond, provide gently sloping edges or other easy exit points so frogs and toads can move safely between the water and surrounding garden habitat.

When would I see a frog using it?

Frogs and toads can be difficult to spot using a wildlife house because they often shelter during the day and become more active after dark. You may have more chance of seeing them on warm, damp evenings or after rainfall, when they are more likely to move around the garden. Avoid lifting or disturbing the house unnecessarily, as this can disrupt wildlife using it. Look for frogs and toads around nearby vegetation and damp areas as well as inside the shelter.
