Collection: Hedgehog Food

In the wild hedgehogs feast on a wide range of foods, but the majority of their diet is made up of invertebrates, including beetles, worms, slugs, caterpillars and earwigs. At various times of year such as when breeding, dry summer periods and the colder months, their natural food can become much more scarce, so hedgehogs will really benefit from a supplementary hedgehog food.

What is the natural habitat of a hedgehog?

Hedgehogs were given a fitting name. Their typical habitat in the UK consists of hedgerows, making them a common sight in fields and on farmlands. But they can also set up home anywhere with nesting and feeding opportunities, including woodlands, parks and more and more often these days - domestic gardens.

Since they often become our garden guests, it’s vital to make sure that they can pass through or under your garden fence. Also, leaving logs, compost piles and untamed areas undisturbed can make your garden a welcoming place for hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs need plentiful food and water, but they also need shelter and nesting sites. Our Homes for Hedgehog Starter Pack comes with everything you need to welcome hedgehogs to your garden. We also have other hedgehog houses to make restful and cosy places for them to nest and hibernate.

When to stop feeding hedgehogs

Traditionally, it was thought that feeding hedgehogs throughout the winter could delay their hibernation and cause them harm. However, with continually milder winters, guidance on this matter has now changed, with experts advising people to continue feeding hedgehogs as long as they’re around to eat.

At any time of year, it’s always a good idea to clear away any uneaten food to avoid attracting rats or spreading disease. However, during winter, you can leave some cat biscuits in a hedgehog’s usual feeding place (if under cover) for a week or so.

The wildlife in your garden needs water as much as food for drinking and bathing. We always recommend putting fresh clean water out every day of the year.
