How do I feed only the small birds?

A guardian cage around the feeder can help restrict access to larger birds and squirrels while allowing smaller garden birds to feed. Models with a mesh of around 25mm are designed to allow species such as blue tits, coal tits, sparrows and finches to pass through, while larger birds such as wood pigeons, magpies and jackdaws are excluded. Position the feeder away from fences, branches and other structures that larger birds or squirrels could use to reach it.

Won't the big birds just eat what falls?

Yes, larger birds may feed on food that falls beneath a caged feeder, and this is not necessarily a problem. Wood pigeons and jackdaws can naturally feed at ground level, allowing smaller birds to use the protected feeder above. If you want to reduce spillage, a base tray can catch some of the food before it reaches the ground. Sunflower hearts can also help reduce mess because they have no husks and produce less waste than many mixed seeds.

Which foods suit small birds best?

Sunflower hearts are a versatile choice for feeding small garden birds, as they are rich in oil and enjoyed by a wide range of species. Niger seed can be particularly attractive to goldfinches, while peanut granules and suet pellets are suitable for species such as tits, robins and dunnocks. Husk-free foods such as sunflower hearts can also help reduce mess beneath feeders.

Small birds still aren't coming. What's wrong?

If small birds are not using your feeder, its position may be making it difficult for them to approach safely. Many small garden birds prefer to move between nearby cover and feeding areas rather than cross large areas of open ground. Positioning the feeder within a couple of metres of a hedge, shrub or suitable tree can provide a nearby place to shelter before and after feeding. Give birds time to discover the feeder, particularly if it is new to your garden.

Do small birds need a smaller feeder, or just a caged one?

Small birds do not necessarily need a smaller feeder, but choosing a capacity that matches the number of birds visiting your garden can help keep food fresher. A large feeder in a quiet garden may leave seed sitting for longer, particularly during wet weather, increasing the risk of damp or spoiled food. A smaller feeder can be easier to keep clean and refill regularly. If larger birds are a concern, a caged feeder can be used alongside the right-sized feeder to restrict access.

Will a caged feeder keep starlings out too?

A standard caged feeder may not reliably exclude starlings, as adult starlings can sometimes access feeders through wider mesh due to their slender necks and long beaks. Using a smaller mesh size can restrict their access, but this may also prevent larger desirable garden birds from reaching the food. There is therefore a balance between excluding larger birds and allowing the species you want to attract. Check the mesh dimensions carefully before choosing a caged feeder, as the spacing cannot usually be changed afterwards.
