Which birds feed on the ground?

Many familiar garden birds prefer feeding at ground level, including blackbirds, dunnocks, robins, wrens, chaffinches and song thrushes. These species may be less likely to use hanging feeders, even when plenty of food is available. Providing a suitable ground-feeding tray or covered feeding area can give them another opportunity to feed. Position it somewhere open, with nearby cover, so birds can feed while keeping an eye out for potential predators.

Will a ground feeder bring rats?

A ground feeder can attract rats if food is left uneaten or spilled on the ground. To reduce the risk, only put out an amount that birds are likely to eat before dusk and remove any leftovers afterwards. Sweep up spilled seed regularly and avoid allowing food to accumulate beneath the feeder. A cage can help restrict access by larger birds, but it will not prevent rats from reaching food at ground level. Feeding little and often can help keep the area under control.

Will a cage keep starlings out?

A standard 25mm mesh cage may restrict larger birds such as wood pigeons, magpies and jackdaws, but it will not reliably exclude starlings. Some adult starlings can fit through 25mm mesh and may still reach the food. Smaller mesh can make it harder for starlings to enter, but it may also restrict access for larger garden birds such as blackbirds and greenfinches. Check the mesh size carefully and consider which species you want the feeder to accommodate.

What mesh size should I choose?

The right mesh size depends on which birds you want to allow into the feeder. Larger mesh can allow birds such as blackbirds and song thrushes to feed, but may also allow squirrels and starlings to enter. Smaller mesh provides greater restriction for larger birds and squirrels, but can also prevent blackbirds and other larger garden birds from accessing the food. There is no single mesh size that suits every species, so choose according to the birds you want to feed.

Is it safe with cats about?

A ground feeder can be used in a garden with cats, but its position is particularly important because ground-feeding birds are more exposed to predators. Place the feeder in an open area where birds have a clear view around them and can spot approaching cats, while keeping suitable cover nearby so they have somewhere to escape.

How do I keep it clean?

Regular cleaning and occasionally moving a ground feeder can help keep the feeding area hygienic. Moving it to a fresh position every few days can reduce the build-up of droppings and old food in one area, while cleaning the tray at least once a week helps remove dirt and food residue. Wash it with hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before refilling. Remove any uneaten food and clear spilled seed from around the feeder regularly.
