Available cavities in nature suitable as bird nesting sites have declined dramatically over the years, so by providing a nest box in your garden you can offer much-needed breeding and roosting space for cavity-nesting birds.

The 1B is the bestselling nest box for garden birds and attracts a wide range of species as it is available with different entrance hole sizes.

Schwegler bird boxes are carefully designed to provide a stable environment and to mimic natural nest and roost sites with internal brood chamber dimensions that are similar to natural cavities.

These Woodcrete nest boxes are famous for their durability - lasting for at least 20-25 years. Woodcrete is a breathable blend of wood, concrete and clay which will not rot, leak, crack or warp, whilst preventing condensation and maintaining more constant temperatures inside than wooden boxes.

26mm entrance hole is suitable for blue, marsh, coal and crested tits and possibly wrens. All other species are prevented from using the nest box due to the smaller entrance hole.

32mm entrance hole is suitable for great, blue, marsh, coal and crested tits, redstart, nuthatch, collared and pied flycatcher, wryneck, tree and house sparrow (and occasionally bats)

Frequently Asked Questions

My blue tits don't seem able to fit in through the 26mm hole is this right?

The blue tits will be able to fit in through the opening and indeed will nest in the smallest hole they can find. They do this as security for the nest. If you see the birds landing and appearing to try and enter, they will generally be looking for grubs and insects rather than nesting.

Are woodstone and woodcrete nest boxes better than wooden ones?

For longevity - absolutely. We would expect these nest boxes to last 25 years or more. In addition - woodstone and woodcrete nest boxes have the added benefit of maintaining a more stable temperature range within the box.
