Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Bird Nest Box

What is the Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Bird Nest Box?

The Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Nest Box is a premium, enclosed wooden bird box designed specifically for British garden birds. Officially selected as the Nest Box of National Nest Box Week, it represents the highest standard in natural, welfare-led nest box design.

Hand assembled in the UK from sustainably sourced English cedar, this nest box provides a safe, insulated and long-lasting home for nesting birds, without the need for paint, preservatives or ongoing maintenance.

What makes it better?

Unlike thinner pine bird boxes that crack, warp or rot, the Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Nest Box is built from 19mm thick cedar panels, offering superior insulation and structural strength.

Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and decay, helping to regulate internal temperatures and protect nesting birds from cold snaps, heat and driving rain. The rigid, hand-screwed construction ensures the box remains stable year after year, even when exposed to the elements.

The carefully sized entrance hole helps deter predators while remaining perfectly suited to a wide range of small garden birds.

Designed to help birds thrive

Every detail of the Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Nest Box has been designed to support healthy nesting:

  • A deep internal cavity encourages natural nesting behaviour
  • Thick cedar walls help maintain a stable microclimate
  • A hinged opening panel allows easy inspection and seasonal cleaning
  • An aluminium fixing nail is supplied to prevent damage when mounting on trees
  • Untreated natural timber, no nasty toxins
  • Screwed construction ensures years of maintenance free service

The result is a nest box that birds return to — season after season.

Which size entrance hole should I choose?

This product includes two entrance hole options, allowing you to choose the right box for the birds in your garden:

  • 26mm entrance hole– Ideal for Blue Tits, with occasional use by Coal and Marsh Tits
  • 32mm entrance hole – Suitable for a wider range of species including Great Tits, Blue Tits, House Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Nuthatches, Redstarts and Pied Flycatchers

Both variants share the same premium construction and dimensions.

A natural addition to any garden

With its clean lines and natural cedar finish, the Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Nest Box blends effortlessly into gardens large or small. Over time, the timber weathers naturally, developing character without compromising performance. No painting, varnishing or preservatives required.

Helpful – Caring – Responsible

When Sean McMenemy started Noah’s Ark Wildlife Gardens as a landscaping business back in 1991, little did he know what a huge impact he was to make on the bird feeding and garden wildlife industries over the following decades.

Over 30-years later he still brings the same passion for garden wildlife to work every day, so it’s no wonder we’re so highly respected. Our expertise lies in providing carefully selected natural food and products that offer significant benefits to wildlife – with the type of customer service only true enthusiasm for our subject can bring.

Meeting a demand for natural, nutritious wildlife food

In those early days, Sean constantly received requests for help in making his clients’ natural gardens more wildlife friendly. Requests for bird food encouraged Sean to research bird feeding, and at that time he found problems in the market with quality and service. He knew then the only way forward was to create his own natural, nutritious range of wildlife food and present it in a way which benefited both the wildlife and the customer. Ark Wildlife was born.

The company has steadily grown since those early days, now standing as one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of bird food and garden wildlife products, despatching over 500 parcels per day across the United Kingdom.

Exceptional service, because we care more than we can put into words

No matter how large our business is now, Ark Wildlife aims to combine the convenience of an online mail order outlet with the caring, helpful touch of a specialist shop. Our people make the difference. We take great pride in the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our ever-growing workforce, still led by our inspirational driving force, Sean. If you read through some of Sean’s blog posts you will see how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares for the welfare of our wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CedarPlus Bird Nest Box need treating or painting?

No. The British cedar wood used is a superior, naturally durable and weather-resistant material. It should never be painted or treated, as this can harm birds and reduce breathability.

When is the best time to put the nest box up?

Ideally in late winter or early spring, but nest boxes can be installed at any time of year. Birds may also use them for overnight roosting outside the breeding season.

Is this nest box suitable for British garden birds?

Yes. The Ark CedarPlus™ Hole Nest Box is specifically designed for native British species, with entrance hole sizes matched to common garden birds.

What birds will use the 26mm and 32mm nest box entrance holes?

- 26mm hole: Blue Tits primarily, with occasional Coal and Marsh Tits
- 32mm: Great Tits, Blue Tits, House Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Nuthatches, Redstarts and Pied Flycatchers
