The Ceramic Bee Skep was designed with a keen eye on tradition. It emulates straw skeps from many centuries ago when bees were kept in baskets. Much tougher than its traditional counterpart, made of hi-fired glazed ceramic. This frost-resistant nester provides a dry and ventilated home for bumblebees and small mammals such as voles, mice, shrews and often birds.
Bumblebees often set up home in old mouse or bird nests, so it’s best to accept this habitat will attract a range of wildlife to adopt it as home and you will find as the years pass, the chances of bumblebees adopting it do increase. Whether used by bees, other insects, or even furry or feathered friends don’t be disappointed, but rather delighted that you are helping all the diversity of wildlife visiting your garden.
Bumblebees orientate by sight, so place the skep in a visible area they can easily find and return to. It is also important to have sufficient contrast between the skep and its surroundings. Avoid placing it in direct sun and try to keep it sheltered from the wind. Good locations include, hedge bottoms, raised banks or flower borders.
