The UK’s most common pigeon is the wood pigeon. They are a very familiar sight in all gardens all around the UK and they are the least fussy eaters of all garden birds. If you have an open bird feeding area, it is more likely that pigeons and squirrels will dominate. Their large size will simply push other birds away. Pigeons are particularly good at scavenging and eating food from flat surfaces.

By investing in pigeon proof bird feeders, squirrel proof feeders and other guardian feeders, it is more likely that smaller birds, like robins and blue tits, will be able to feed in peace. These feeders have a wide diameter cage to stop bigger birds being able to access the food.

How do I keep pigeons off my bird feeder?

Pigeons love feeding on bird feeder scraps, so as well as investing in a pigeon proof feeder, always maintain your bird feeders and keep them clean. Catch falling seed with a tray.

You can also be careful about the types of bird feed that you put in your feeder. Pigeons are less keen on straight feeds, such as niger seeds. Read more on our blog about wood pigeon identification, habitat and food.

What’s the best bird feeder for small birds?

You might be looking forward to seeing some unusual smaller birds in your garden, only for pigeons to crash the party and take all the food you put out. But you do have a few options if you want to give smaller birds a fighting chance.

The bars on guardian feeders mean pigeons and other large birds find it harder to get the food. Squirrels will also find it less accessible, leaving more for the smaller birds you want to attract.

Another option are the lantern style feeders such as the Little Lantern or My Favourites , which are specifically designed to accommodate smaller birds that can cling onto it while denying larger birds the space to perch.
