What does a Ring Necked Parakeet look like?

Length: 40 cm.

Also known as a Rose-Ringed Parakeet, they are a medium-sized bird with striking green coloration with a long narrow tail and bright red bill. The males have a narrow black and pink neck ring, whilst the females have duller emeralds collars with no markings.

The calls are a sharp screeching call, often heard while in flight.

When and where do Ring Necked Parakeets nest?

Breeding starts from January to June. They nest in holes in trees in gardens and parklands or high-up cavities such as a crevice in a wall. They line their nests with bark and feathers. The female will lay three to four smooth white eggs, which are incubated by the female alone for twenty-two to twenty-four days. The females are sometimes helped by the males to raise the chicks which fledge after forty to forty-five days after hatching.
