Our border flower seeds are selected from species that are colourful, reliable growers, hardy and beneficial to wildlife. We believe a wildlife friendly garden should still look and smell great for human visitors as much as insects.

Planting a mixture of annuals, biennials and perennials will create a border that provides dramatic and beneficial colour and nectar over the longest season and will have the benefit of growing year after year. Many of these seeds can be planted directly where you wish them to grow but all will benefit from starting in seed trays and later planting out once established.

For easier flowering options, see our self-seeding wildflower seed ranges, seed balls and seed mats, which are better choices for inexperienced gardeners or time restricted wildlife lovers.

How do I keep the border useful all season?

Plan your planting to provide flowers from early spring through to autumn, rather than having most of the border flowering only in summer. Early-flowering plants such as crocus, pulmonaria and hellebores can provide an important source of nectar and pollen when fewer flowers are available. Later in the year, sedum, verbena and ivy can help extend the supply into autumn. A mixture of plants with different flowering periods can provide pollinators with a more reliable source of food throughout the season.

Do I need native flower species?

Native plants can provide valuable food and habitat for a wider range of wildlife, particularly specialist insects that rely on particular plant species. However, many non-native garden plants and cultivated varieties can also provide useful sources of nectar and pollen for generalist pollinators such as bumblebees and hoverflies. A mixture of native plants and good nectar-rich garden varieties can therefore work well. Avoid planting species listed as invasive in the UK.

When should I sow flower seeds?

The best sowing time depends on whether the flowers are hardy or half-hardy annuals. Hardy annuals can often be sown outdoors in autumn, allowing them to establish before winter and flower earlier the following year. Half-hardy annuals are usually sown under cover in spring and planted outside after the risk of frost has passed. Always check the seed packet for the recommended sowing period, as this varies between plant species and varieties.
