Different birds have different nesting habits. Many of them would build nests in cavities in trees, secure places in hedges and in the eaves of houses and outbuildings. However natural habitats are in short supply, so offering nest boxes in your garden will give your birds a home and can be hugely rewarding.

Nest boxes in all styles and designs

Nest boxes for garden birds come in all shapes and sizes, made for different birds and their nesting habits. All birds will benefit from using them, especially smaller birds who have to compete with stronger birds for a place to nest. Birds that enjoy using nest boxes the most include blue tits, great tits, house martins, sparrows and robins.

There are two main types – open fronted and with holes. The nesting boxes with holes come in different sizes, so the hole is the right size for different species to access and offers defence against predators who are not large enough to get into the box. They are all designed from insulating and durable materials, like wood or woodcrete.

Which way should a nest box face?

Ideally, face a nest box between north and east to help protect it from strong sunlight, prevailing winds and driving rain. A sheltered position can help prevent the box becoming excessively hot in summer while keeping it drier during wet weather. However, the surrounding location is just as important, so choose a position that is sheltered but still gives birds a clear flight path to the entrance. Once installed, leave the box undisturbed and avoid moving it after birds have started using it.

Is a tree or a wall better for a nest box?

Both trees and walls can provide suitable locations for a nest box, provided it is positioned securely and away from easy access by predators. A wall or fence can offer a stable fixing point and may make it harder for cats to reach the box from above. If you choose a tree, avoid placing the box close to branches or other structures that could give cats easy access to the entrance. Whichever location you choose, make sure the box has a clear flight path and is protected from prevailing weather.

When should I put a nest box up?

The best time to put up a nest box is during autumn or winter, before birds begin looking for nesting sites in late winter and early spring. Installing it early gives birds time to discover and investigate the box before the breeding season starts, and it may also provide a sheltered place to roost during colder weather. If you have not put one up yet, it is still worth doing later in the season, as birds may investigate a new box at any time.

Should a nest box have a perch under the entrance hole?

No, a nest box does not need a perch beneath the entrance hole. Most garden birds that use nest boxes can land directly on the front of the box and enter through the hole without one. A perch can also provide an additional foothold for larger birds or squirrels attempting to reach into the entrance. If a nest box has a perch, it is generally better to remove it rather than adding one to a box that does not have one.

Something is pecking the nest box entrance wider. Can I stop it?

Yes, a metal entrance plate can help protect a nest box from woodpeckers and squirrels enlarging the entrance hole. Great spotted woodpeckers and grey squirrels may damage nest boxes when trying to access the contents, particularly if the entrance is made from softer timber. A metal plate fitted securely around the entrance can reinforce the hole and make it much harder to enlarge. Fit the plate before the breeding season where possible, and make sure it matches the original entrance size.
