What is it?
The Kent Bat Box is a simple effective design, double chamber bat roost constructed from UK grown wood and manufactured in the UK. The untreated sawn timber replicates the natural feel and grip of trees in the natural environment.

How does it help?
Based on a design by the Kent Bat Group, this rustic, double chamber bat box contains three nesting areas. Two within the front chambers and a third cavity crawl space at the rear of the box created once it is mounted. The box is intended to remain in position for several years and should not be disturbed. It`s a real joy to check for occupancy by watching at dusk for bats emerging. The box is designed to be self-cleaning.

Sean says:
"
Bats are a vital part of our native wildlife, accounting for almost a third of all mammal species in the UK and occupy a wide range of habitats, such as wetlands, woodlands, farmland, as well as urban areas. Providing rustic bat roosts really can help support these important creatures. Wildlife and Birdcare CIC products are built in the UK from designs by leading charities. This bat box is constructed by a NOT FOR PROFIT enterprise employing people with learning disabilities."

The Kent Bat Box

Helpful – Caring – Responsible

When Sean McMenemy started Noah’s Ark Wildlife Gardens as a landscaping business back in 1991, little did he know what a huge impact he was to make on the bird feeding and garden wildlife industries over the following decades.

Over 30-years later he still brings the same passion for garden wildlife to work every day, so it’s no wonder we’re so highly respected. Our expertise lies in providing carefully selected natural food and products that offer significant benefits to wildlife – with the type of customer service only true enthusiasm for our subject can bring.

Meeting a demand for natural, nutritious wildlife food

In those early days, Sean constantly received requests for help in making his clients’ natural gardens more wildlife friendly. Requests for bird food encouraged Sean to research bird feeding, and at that time he found problems in the market with quality and service. He knew then the only way forward was to create his own natural, nutritious range of wildlife food and present it in a way which benefited both the wildlife and the customer. Ark Wildlife was born.

The company has steadily grown since those early days, now standing as one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of bird food and garden wildlife products, despatching over 500 parcels per day across the United Kingdom.

Exceptional service, because we care more than we can put into words

No matter how large our business is now, Ark Wildlife aims to combine the convenience of an online mail order outlet with the caring, helpful touch of a specialist shop. Our people make the difference. We take great pride in the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our ever-growing workforce, still led by our inspirational driving force, Sean. If you read through some of Sean’s blog posts you will see how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares for the welfare of our wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you open the Bat Box to clean it?

This bat box cannot be opened lessening the
chances of the bats being harmed through becoming
trapped under the opened lid, or disturbed by people
opening the top.

Should I site one bat box on its own?

Ideally, put up two or three boxes facing in different directions to provide a range of temperature conditions. ie boxes facing from south-east to south-west allow the sun to fall on each box for part of the day. During very hot days a south-facing box may overheat, but the other boxes should have some shade.

Where can I put my new bat box?

Place at a height of between 3 and 6 metres on trees and as high as possible (close to the eaves for additional shelter from the weather) on buildings. Ensure a clear, unobstructed approach/entry path.

Bats like warmth so boxes should be south, southeast or southwest facing to ensure exposure to the sun for part of the day.

Bats are nocturnal and adapted to low light conditions. Artificial light sources should not be directed either on to the box or the approach/entry path to the box.
