Renovation of older houses means that many of the swifts preferred nesting spots, such as under roofs, in attics or behind tiles are often blocked, so that they cannot find sufficient nesting sites.

The Schwegler 17C swift box can help this species by providing valuable nesting opportunities and the installation of several units is the ideal way to support a swift colony. These boxes have been used across Europe with great success for many decades.

The Swift Box 17C is made from a blend of compressed plant fibres and concrete for good insulation and long life. This is a larger version of the Standard 17 Swift Box and can accommodate two pairs of swifts. The box is a natural grey colour but can be painted to match if required using an air-permeable paint.

Two fixing brackets and screws/plugs are included. Please check for suitability of the mounting material provided.

Siting & Positioning:
Under or close to roofs, at least 5m from ground. Please ensure unobstructed access for birds entering and leaving the box. The installation of several boxes in a building will assist the rapid formation of swift colonies. Verify safe hold of the box after installation.

Cleaning & Inspection:
Cleaning is easy and convenient with this box but is not essential. The box can be easily opened by rotating the circular plate containing the entrance hole by 90° into vertical position and removing it. Swift nests are always located in the darkest corner as far away from the entrance hole as possible. After replacing the plate: Latch the front plate by rotating the entrance hole into horizontal position.

Painting:
Nest Boxes can be painted to match the house wall - it is very important to ensure that you always use paint that is air-permeable.
