Swifts are astonishing aerial acrobats who spend their lives in the air; drinking, eating, mating and sleeping on the wing with the only exception being when they are nesting. Normally arriving in Europe from Africa in late April, early May - they come to the UK to breed, returning to warmer climates in late July early August.

Modern building techniques and designs exclude swifts from their traditional nesting sites in the eaves and gables of buildings so offering nesting opportunities such as this nest box are essential to assist them in successfully raising a brood.

Siting:
Site as high as possible (ideally 5 metres plus) on a flat surface with a clear flight path below the nest. Use fixings in the four slots on the side of the nest box for attaching to the building.

These Swift nest boxes should be positioned under the eaves or gable of a building, which offers protection from the weather.

If another species uses the nest box the rear hole is there for cleaning.

Q: There is a large round hole in the back of the nestbox, what is this for?

A: The rear hole is for cleaning if another species uses it, as Swifts are very clean. This hole also makes it very easy to mount a camera.

Q: How weather proof is the swift nest box? Should we varnish it?

A: Swifts traditional nesting sites are under the eaves and gables of buildings. Nest boxes should be positioned in these places, which will mean that they are out of the weather. Varnishing, painting or treating the wood in anyway will deter the birds from nesting.
