Can you give me some advice on where to put a hedgehog house in my garden?

Hedgehogs readily take up residence in appropriately sited hedgehog houses and for the best chance of success they should be situated in a quiet part of the garden, preferably against a wall or fence out of direct sunlight. Make sure the entrance is sheltered to avoid being exposed to drafts and strong winds.

Hedgehog houses may be used for winter hibernation, throughout the summer as lie-ups or, if you're very lucky, by a pregnant female making a nest to have her young in June. You can find more detailed information here.

What is the natural habitat of a hedgehog?

In the wild, they look for deep cover under brambles, in hedgerows as well as in woodlands and parks. They seek dry spaces out of prevailing winds and may use old rabbit holes, fallen trees and other natural cover. They'll bring in dry bedding to make the location warm and dry.

What size should a hedgehog house be?

Your hedgehog house should be large enough to accommodate at least one hedgehog and some insulation materials for the winter, with enough space for your guests to move around comfortably. If you`ve noticed a sow and her hoglets in your garden, you might want a larger hedgehog house.

In terms of width and depth, aim for a minimum of about 35-40 cm. In height, around 20 cm is enough. It’s important that the entrance is no larger than 15 cm by 15 cm so that larger animals don’t try to use it.

Will a hedgehog house attract rats?

Rats will take an interest in hedgehog houses as well as any food you are putting out for your visitors/residents but there are some things you can do to deter vermin.

• Grow some mint: rats hate the smell of it. Alternatively, spray peppermint oil by the hedgehog house
• Leave food out in the open, where rats will be reluctant to eat it
• Supervise feeding time, as hedgehogs won’t be as deterred by your presence as rats will be
• Clear any unused food away immediately
• Consider feeding hedgehogs with insect-based food, which rats are less keen on

Where should I place my hedgehog house?

If you place your hedgehog house in your garden during the spring or summer months, this will mean it is ready for when hedgehogs are looking for a place to hibernate during the winter.

Place your hedgehog house in a quiet part of your garden, ideally under cover against a wall, fence or bank. Place the box out of direct sunlight but make sure the entrance does not face north and is out of the wind. It can take a while for hedgehogs to take up residence, though we have reports of them even being occupied on the first night.

Will hedgehogs use the house straight away?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It can take weeks or even months for a hedgehog to take up residence. Place it correctly and be patient, once found, they may return year after year but if it's not used in the first season, try relocating it and make sure hedgehogs are visiting your garden.

Do hedgehog houses need cleaning?

Yes, but only at the right time. Clean your house once a year in spring, after hibernation but before nesting season. Wear gloves, remove old bedding, and rinse with boiling water (no chemicals). Allow to dry before refilling with fresh bedding.

Should I add bedding to a hedgehog house?

Yes, especially in tidy gardens where natural materials are scarce. Place a handful of dry leaves, hay, or specialist hedgehog bedding inside to encourage them to settle in.
