There are ways that you can adapt your pole feeder so that it is inaccessible for squirrels. You can use a squirrel baffle so squirrels can`t climb your pole system or you can use a squirrel proof bird feeder.

How to build your bird feeder pole system

If you wish, your pole system can form the central feeding station for your birds. By adding a variety of accessories you can create the right system to suit your garden. Our strong steel poles are durable and will withstand the harshest weather. Alternatively there are the bird feeding station or decorative bird feeding station which have all the accessories included.

Pole feeders should be placed somewhere quiet and sheltered, where they will not be disturbed by human traffic. It is also a good idea to put your bird feeder somewhere open, so your birds can have an all-round view of any predators. Read our blog on what bird-feeders need to know

Try to balance out the amount of food you put out each day for your birds with the number of birds who come and feed from your pole feeder. It is important to only put out enough food to be cleared with a day or two, to ensure dropped food does not attract vermin.

Wild birds need water as much as food for drinking and bathing. We always recommend putting fresh clean water out every day of the year.

You can also move our bird feeding pole systems around, meaning that the ground can stay fresh and dry and clear of droppings.

How high should bird feeders be off the ground?

It’s best to keep your bird feeder around 1.3-1.7 m off the ground – so high that cats can’t easily leap up and reach it. This can also help to keep unwanted guests like mice and rats away.

Of course, you might need it higher or lower depending on the height of the people feeding the birds.

How to keep cats away from bird feeders

There’s more to deterring cats than placing bird feeders out of cats’ reach. After all, they can be pretty determined and as fluffy as they are, they’re actually apex predators.

The garden pole system or feeding stations help as cats won’t be able to climb it like they would a tree.

And remember: just as cats naturally hunt birds, they also naturally hate citrus scents. So placing orange, lemon or lime peel around your garden can be surprisingly effective.
