Do the squirrels in your garden need a cosy home to rest over the winter? If you are lucky enough to live in an area populated by native red squirrels, our squirrel houses will provide them with protection from predators and a warm place for them to raise their young. The well-documented decline of native red squirrels means that there are far fewer squirrels than ever. Support this species or grey squirrels by placing a squirrel house in your garden.Read More
Our Red Squirrel Nest Box can be used by either grey or red squirrels or even other garden creatures. It has a durable and weather-proof construction and offers side and front entrances for squirrels, so they can check for predators before leaving the nest chamber. It also has routed grooves inside and out to help baby squirrels gain access whilst they are young. These features may also benefit grey squirrels and other wildlife, such as jackdaws.
The box should be placed on a tree in a wooded area, three to four metres from the ground, using a back plate mount. Situate the box out of the way of direct sunlight and the prevailing weather. Offer squirrels our specially-formulated Ark Red Squirrel Food.
The front panels can be removed for inspection and cleaning. Please be aware that red squirrels are a protected species and must never be disturbed. An occupied nest box may only be inspected by a licensed professional.
Why are red squirrels endangered?
Numbers of red squirrels in the UK have fallen dramatically since grey squirrels were introduced in the 1870s. There a number of reasons for their decline including the loss of natural woodland habitats, lack of food, disease and road traffic. They do also not breed as often, only producing three to five kittens every litter, with only one or two litters per year.
Numbers in England are now thought to be as low as 15,000. Read more on our blog about red squirrel identification, habitat and food.
