Different bird feeders will attract a diversity of beautiful birds to your garden. Our seed trays can be put out on their own or placed underneath a tube feeder to stop seeds falling to the ground and attracting vermin. This will also reduce seed wastage.

How to keep the ground under bird feeders clean

While bird feeders attract beautiful visitors to your garden, they can also attract disease if they’re not cleaned regularly. And it’s not enough to keep the feeders themselves spick and span: you also need to think about the ground under your feeder. This is where bird-feeder seed trays can really help.

Leftovers under feeders will soon attract squirrels and mice – which can deter the birds themselves. So, make it a habit to clear the ground under your bird feeder, raking away empty shells and uneaten bird treats. Although many of us prefer not to feed pigeons, they can do a great job of clearing up any spillages.

Alternatively, you can choose foods like already-shelled nuts, sunflower hearts or suet – all of which are 100% edible with no discarded outer shell. And, of course, it’s best to avoid putting more food out than will be eaten in a day.

How to feed birds without a bird feeder

Bird feeders are practical and easy to clean, but many people favour bird tables, which can look great and really add to the rustic feel of a garden. Whether it comes with a roof or has a simpler design, the most important thing is that your bird table is easy to clean.

If you want to get more creative, you can also insert fatty foods into the cracks of wooden posts or other pieces of wood raised high. This gives more nimble birds – like robins, tits and woodpeckers – some stimulation to go with their food.

Other birds prefer to feed from the ground, and you can scatter food for them on your lawn or patio. Alternatively, using a ground feeding tray will help you keep their food neat and tidy. Either way, avoid putting out more than a day’s food so that you don’t attract mice and other unwelcome guests.

Providing food and water for your garden birds will help compensate for the loss of bird’s natural habitats and scarcity of food during the colder months. Make sure you feed your birds regularly because once you offer them a supply of food, they will return regularly to expect it. You will start to learn more about what the particular species will like to eat from the seed and feed trays. Read our UK garden bird feeding guide to help you identify the different species that visit you.

Remember, we do not just sell bird seed feeders – we also offer a wide variety of bird seed mixes and other bird foods to put in the tray. Remove old food to prevent the spread of disease and clean up any fallen food to prevent rats.

Wild birds need water as much as food for drinking and bathing. We always recommend putting fresh clean water out every day of the year.
