Mealworms for Birds

Mealworms are not actually worms as the name suggests, but rather the larvae of Tenebrio molitor, a species of darkling beetle. Garden birds naturally eat insects, so by providing mealworms, you are supplementing their diet with a fantastic source of protein. You can choose from feeding live mealworms or freeze dried mealworms.

Dried mealworms are a convenient way to offer them to your birds if you prefer not to handle live mealworms. They can be provided for your birds either straight, in Ark Hearty™ Mealworm Mix, Ark Summer Support Mix or Ark Suet Balls. You can also offer a mix of live and dried mealworms.

Live mealworms are particularly beneficial because they have a high moisture content. This is especially vital for chicks and fledglings who are wholly dependent on getting enough hydration through the food provided by their parents. Live mealworms will keep for up to 7-days in a cool environment and you can keep them longer by providing Ark` Mealworm Food or refrigeration.

Mealworms should not be fed to hedgehogs as they can become addicted to them with potential health consequences, see our blog on Metabolic Bone Disease.

Our starling proof suet & mealworm bird feeders allows small birds to eat mealworms, while keeping larger animals out, including starlings and jackdaws. Wild birds need water as much as food, for drinking and bathing. We always recommend putting fresh clean water out every day of the year.
